Climacturia Presentation at the International Continence Society
On Thursday 9/14, my Fellow (Dr. Casey McCraw) spoke to the those assembled for the annual meeting of the International Continence Society (ICS). Held in Florence, Italy this year’s meeting was attended by several hundred physicians and nurses from every part of the world, all of who came together to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and learn ways to better treat men and women who suffer from urinary incontinence. The ICS is the premier professional society that promotes research and treatment of urinary incontinence. I am extremely pleased that my findings on the use of a male sling to treat urinary leakage that occurs during sexual activity was selected for presentation at the meeting; I am even more excited that these patient outcomes were so enthusiastically received.
Climacturia is the term that refers to leakage of urine with orgasm/sexual activity, and it is not uncommon after a man undergoes a radical prostatectomy for the treatment of prostate cancer. Men who suffer from climacturia are VERY, VERY bothered by this urine leakage… and so are the people with whom they are intimate. I will tell you that when a man seeks my care because of urinary leakage during sex, it is an emotional conversation. The frustration and embarrassment are tremendous. Fortunately, there is an effective treatment for men who have climacturia, and that is what Dr. McCraw and I presented at the ICS meeting last week.
A male sling procedure is most often used to treat day-to-day urinary incontinence in men who have had their prostate removed; it is extremely effective. However, I have found that a male sling is also really effective in treating climacturia. My series of men who had climacturia and were treated with a male sling numbers over 50 men; this is the largest series anywhere. The cure rate was over 90%. In other words, I can tell a man who is fed up with leaking urine during sex (intercourse or oral sex) that if I do a male sling he has a greater than 90% chance that the climacturia will stop…and won’t come back. If you have climacturia don’t accept it, don’t think you cannot be treated. Seek help!!!
What makes my job so special is to be in a position to help men with sexual dysfunction, urinary incontinence, Peyronie’s Disease, and climacturia. If the response in Italy is any indication, the surgeons who heard our talk will be treating more and more men, and that’s a very good thing.
